Riverstroll honored
Our Riverstroll program has been honored with inclusion in the National Park Service Underground Railroad program that seeks to coordinate preservation and education efforts nationwide and integrate local historical places, museums, and interpretive programs associated with the Underground Railroad into a mosaic of community, regional, and national stories.

Co-Founder honored
Dr. David Anderson/Sankofa was one of a number of prominent African American storytellers featured in the National Folk Life Festival held in Washington, DC in June. Last year, David was among recipients of the 2008 Free Press Prize for Leadership in The Contemporary Underground Railroad Community. [read the article]

Riverwalk honored
Our "Riverwalk Underground Railroad Tour" has been designated as one of 21 sites of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor of the National Park Service.  Visitors can have their passport book stamped or can purchase a book after participating in the tour.

You are invited to attend any of our events which are open to the public, and please share our good news with your family and friends.

August 21-22 | We will conduct our"Riverwalk Tour" for a group of young people and adults from Albany and Syracuse who are participating in the "Ujima Journey" program.

August 21 at 7:30PM | We're joining members of the Blackstorytelling League of Rochester to present the play, "How Come Ya'all Got to Blame Me?" during the Sankofa Play Festival.

August 22 | The Sankofa Festival will take place at Village Gate Square from noon until night. There will be music, vendors and cultural activities throughout the day.

September 16 at 4:30PM | AKWAABA enactors will give a historical presentation for the Nazareth College Constitution Day program.

October 1 at 7:30PM | The Ashe Cultural Center of New Orleans will present their dance theater adaptation of David Anderson's retelling of the "Origin of Life on Earth" at the Nazareth College Arts Center. During their stay the dancers will give a master class for Nazareth College students and a school performance for Rochester area school children. There will be a brief pre-performance lecture given by the author and a CD signing after the program.

October 16 | Our enactors will present for a group of Columbus educators who are sponsored by Kenley Konnection. "Visit Rochester" is sponsoring this familiarization tour.

October 18 at 2:00PM | AKWAABA will present "Reading, Writing and Remembering" at the Rochester Central Library auditorium. This program is one in the series of Sunday programs the library is sponsoring in celebration of Rochester's 175th anniversary.

October 24, 7-9PM | The Blackstorytelling League will present its storytelling festival on Saturday at Wilson Commencement Academy. The program will include stories from "The Daughter's of Creative Sound," children from the Boys and Girls Club who are being mentored by the Blackstorytelling League members and of course members of the League.

December 26-31 | KWANZAA programs will take place in sites throughout the community.  Details will follow.
