Our culminating event of the "Steps Toward Freedom" program with the fifth grade students took place on Friday, June 6 at #39 School. The program, funded by The New York State Council on the Arts, #39 School, and AKWAABA: The Heritage Associates, encouraged the students to research Rochester's Freedom Movement of the 19th Century. The children demonstrated what they learned through an African dance, acting in the play "Who is Frederick Douglass?," reciting original poems, singing freedom songs, creating a freedom quilt, researching the meaning of Adinkra symbols, and other related artistic activities. AKWAABA Associates provided Underground Railroad research, tours, taught African dance techniques, created characterizations of "freedom seekers," and helped the children rehearse their program parts.
